There are two types of floor grinders – planetary and rotary. Rotary grinders have a large disc that rotates along the bottom of the grinder that is in contact with the floor. There may be several small discs, too that rotate separately to the main disc. These are heavy machines used for aggressive tasks.
Planetary grinders have a large disc in the center of the grinder’s base with smaller discs rotating around it (like how planets rotate around the sun). The larger disc doesn’t contact the floor, while the smaller satellite discs all work to grind and polish the floor at the same time. These are lightweight and easy to maneuver, but can still handle aggressive tasks.
