Getting the right concrete surface profile is a key part of a successful surface preparation task. Whether you’re wanting a non-slip surface on exterior concrete or you need to make sure an epoxy or mastic will bond, you have to consider your profile and use the right equipment and tooling to achieve it.

Understanding Concrete Surface Profiles

The concrete surface profile is the measure of the average distance from the highest points to the lowest when looked at through a cross-section of the surface. The rating scale begins at 1 for the smoothest concrete surface going to 9 for intensely rough, uneven profiles.

Getting the right surface profile will ensure your coatings and overlays will bond properly, causing them to look nicer and last longer. Generally, the thicker the coating, the higher the surface profile necessary to achieve the proper adhesion. For example, if you’re only using a thin sealant, a smooth profile of 1 or 2 would be ideal. However, self-leveling coatings require a 4 to a 6 profile while thick mastic overlays range from a 5 to a 9 profile.

How to Achieve the Right Surface Profile

Once you determine surface profile is best for the project, the next step is figuring out how you’ll get there. Here’s a general guideline for what kind of equipment you’ll need to achieve the right profile:

  • A floor grinder is best for smoother surfaces, typically profiles 1 and 2.
  • Shot blasting, depending on the size of shot used, can create a profile ranging from 3 all the way to 9.
  • A scarifier has rows of cutting wheels that chip away at cement, creating a surface ranging between 4 and 9 profiles. Not only will this prepare areas for new overlays, it can also create the texture needed for non-slip surfaces.
