Polyaspartic is a fairly new material used in concrete floor coating and it’s getting a lot of attention. Offering a rapid cure time, it, it bonds easily to concrete and has the flexibility to cover and bridge small cracks and capillaries in the surface. Plus, it has excellent stain resistance, maintains a crystal clear appearance, and offers high abrasion resistance. However, if it does start showing wear over time, we’re sharing the steps and equipment you need to deglaze and recoat a polyaspartic surface.

Check out the video from our Learning Series to see the steps in action!

Deglazing the Polyaspartic Floor Coating

Deglazing and recoating is a time-saving way to improve the look of your floor, but this can only be done if the existing coating is in good condition and isn’t seriously cracked, chipped, or peeling. Otherwise the coating would need to be completely removed and a fresh coating would nee to be applied. However, if it’s in good condition and only shows minor wear, a recoating can be performed.

Before adding a fresh coating of polyaspartic to the surface, it’s necessary to remove the top glaze so the new material will properly bond and hold. This means there needs to be a light texture, similar to priming a wall so the paint will properly adhere. As you’ll see in the video, we used the Eddy Orbital Sander 3000 and 80 grit sandpaper to rough the surface slightly, without causing any damage or deep scratches.

Recoating a Polyaspartic Floor Coating

Once the floor is sanded, you’ll want to remove any dust or debris from the surface with a microfiber mop and cleaning solution before applying the fresh coating. With polyaspartic, it’s important to work quickly as the “pot life” is only around 30 to 40 minutes. We used a polyaspartic coating with a squeegee, then a roller to get a smooth, even coating that will maintain its beauty and shine for years, even with heavy traffic.
