When it comes to cutting or grinding concrete, several variables go into getting the results you want, one of which is choosing dry or wet cutting. Wet-cutting concrete is messy, producing copious amounts of slurry that is exhausting and labor-intensive to clean up. To help you save time and still get excellent results, we’re sharing two ways to manage slurry on your next project. Be sure to watch the video below to see these methods in action.

When Should You Wet Grind or Cut Concrete?

Typically, water has been used for concrete grinding as well as polishing marble and terrazzo in order to minimize the amount of dust and reduce the amount of wear on diamond grinding pads. It wasn’t until dust collection equipment became accessible that dry grinding was a safe, feasible option to avoid breathing in toxic silica dust. Today, wet grinding concrete is generally used for more intensive grinding with coarse-grit pads because it helps prevent tooling from glazing over and extends the life of the pads.

Use Less Water When Grinding Concrete

As you’ll see in the video, we don’t use a lot of water when grinding the concrete. More water means a more difficult cleanup, especially if you need to dry slurry out before you dispose of it properly. By using a lighter spray of water on the concrete, the dust is still eliminated, but the slurry has a thicker viscosity. This makes it easier to suction up in a wet-dry vacuum or even clean up with a squeegee.

Use a Chemical Slurry Treatment

At Buy Manufacturers Direct, we have two safe, effective ingredients that can make slurry cleanup quick and simple.

SlurrySafe AR is a concrete slurry remover and cleaner. This biodegradable, non-toxic, EPA-approved “cleangredient” dissolves the calcium in concrete slurry so it can be rinsed easily away. This is ideal for cleaning minimal amounts of slurry, such as dried concrete on tools, splashed slurry on walls, and any left over residue after using a wet-vac.

SlurrySlayer is a concrete slurry solidifier that absorbs the water in concrete slurry and makes it a safe, non-hazardous solid that can then be accepted as landfills. Made with a proprietary blend of absorbent polymers, you simply need to add mix one pound of SlurrySlayer into 10 gallons of slurry to create a solid byproduct.
